Recently, the US Department of Transportation has come out more strongly against people who have used cell phones while driving, now threatening to mandate scramblers so that no one–not even passengers–can use their phones in a car, an effort to prevent the hundreds of thousands of injuries that result from distracted driving every year in the US.

Of course, there are some obvious limitations. GPS (increasingly used by cell phones, rather than separate in car devices) is a great tool if you get lost, need to find a gas station, etc. Further, apps like Pandora have encouraged people to used cell phones as an improved version of the radio. Not to mention, of course, that the mass popularity of cell phones began as a safety measure for emergency situations, and some GPS apps will help you avoid traffic, construction, and other accident-prone situations.

As STD rates spread among British youth, a chip is being developed which you can either pee or spit on, and is then used with cell phones’ software to diagnose an STD. The tools are meant to ease the anxiety of young people who may be too embarrassed to see a doctor. (More over at The Guardian)

Although the hope is that young people will have used cell phones to prevent the spread of infections, some STDs, like hepatitis, can live in the open air for days, and spreading it to your already germ-infested cell phone or computer might do more harm than good.
